Grant Program Achievements

Jefferson Foundation began issuing its inaugural grants to qualified organizations in 2014. Since then grant recipients have proceeded to utilize the funds they received to implement the programs and projects for which they had requested support.

We are proud to now provide the following list of achievements that the 2018 grant recipients have reported as a result of their efforts to promote health and well-being in Jefferson County. We also are proud to have provided the financial support that helped to enable these organizations to achieve these significant accomplishments.

Academic Scholarships

• 18 students received scholarships for Jefferson College’s Health Occupation programs.
• 2 scholarships were awarded to Jefferson County residents through The Scholarship Foundation.
• Student advisors worked with 149 high school seniors and conducted financial aid and personal finance workshops for 60 students and family members.

Basic Needs

• 1,400 children received backpacks of food for the weekend.
• 7 vehicles were purchased by basic needs agencies to assist with picking up donated food and household items. 4 local food pantries renovated and made facility upgrades to their buildings.
• $132,254 in financial assistance was provided to 397 households.
• 40,409 individuals received food from local pantries.
• 6,260 families received over 89,807 baby items including baby food, layettes, diapers, wipes, formula, baby clothes and maternity items.
• 1,178 students received assistance with school supplies, clothes and hygiene items.
• 250 residents received nursing and medical supplies, including grab bars, shower benches, nutritional shakes, wheelchair accessories and medication boxes.
• 48 households with 179 individuals received direct financial assistance after experiencing a home fire disaster.
• 5,606 healthy meals were provided to Jefferson County residents who have HIV/AIDS or cancer.
• 83 mobile food distribution events were held in Jefferson County.
• 11,700 dozen eggs and 4,366 pounds of fresh meat were purchased and distributed to food pantries and residential facilities.

Dental Services

• 5,600 dental visits were provided to Jefferson County children.
• New equipment was purchased for Upward Smiles. The equipment helped the agency provide additional restorative and specialty procedures.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse

• 2,140 Jefferson County students participated in substance abuse prevention programs.
• The Jefferson County Treatment Court program served 60 participants.
• 150 Jefferson County residents received residential substance abuse treatment services
• 3 new vehicles were purchased for Teen Challenge. The vehicles are used to transport clients to work, school and medical appointments.

Exercise and Healthy Lifestyle Education

• 79 girls from 5 Jefferson County schools participated in the Girls on the Run program.
• Bikes were purchased to provide a cycling program at 16 Jefferson County schools and NextStep for Life’s summer program.

Foster Care and Adoption Services

• CASA of Jefferson County trained 28 new volunteer advocates and served 165 children.
• Medical Case Management services were provided to 70 Jefferson County children.
• School supplies were provided to 145 children who are in foster care.
• Over 3,000 hours of supervised visits were provided to families.
• 1,047 Jefferson County residents participated in health and wellness programs.
• 80 foster family members received continuing education at a training extravaganza.
• 18 new foster homes in Jefferson County were recruited and licensed.

Health and Health-Related Education

• 82 individuals received information and referrals from the Alzheimer’s Association hotline and 27 people attended educational programs. 95 people received in-depth care planning and consultation services.
• Suicide prevention presentations were made to 751 students and anti-violence presentations were made to 1,086 students.
• 1,615 children received health and developmental screenings
• 549 home visits were provided to 90 expectant parents or parents with young children.
• 644 Jefferson County residents participated in health and wellness programs.
• 918 residents received pregnancy services including pregnancy tests, ultrasounds and assistance with prenatal vitamins, diapers, wipes, formula and cribs.
• Audiology services were provided to 181 residents and 30 residents received hearing aids.
• Center for Hearing & Speech purchased a truck and trailer to implement a mobile audiology program in Jefferson County.
• The Wellness Center at St. Pius X High School was expanded.
• Improvements were made to the Peace Pantry Farmer’s Market building and to Get Healthy DeSoto’s kitchen.

Homeless and Domestic Violence Services

• 329 counseling hours and 86 nights of emergency shelter were provided to Jefferson County clients who experienced domestic violence. 226 Jefferson County residents contacted the 24-hour crisis hotline.
• 3 Jefferson County Veterans and their families received assistance to prevent homelessness and to secure stable housing.
• 332 residents who are homeless received shelter services or lodging assistance.

Medical Equipment

• 3 agencies purchased emergency medical equipment.
• 1,939 pieces of medical equipment were loaned out to 589 clients.

Mental Health Counseling

• 45 children and adults from Jefferson County received grief counseling.
• 1,080 Jefferson County children and adults received counseling/mental health services.
• 46 Jefferson County youth received free psychological evaluations.
• 64 clients who have a relationship with the criminal justice system and mental health issues received mental health and other basic services.
• 310 residents participated in support groups.
• Provident’s crisis hotline and clinical line responded to 673 calls from Jefferson County residents.

Obesity

• 154 families received financial assistance for Camp Jumpstart’s virtual program.

Physical and Mental Disabilities

• 22 children who are blind or visually impaired and their families received 322 hours of mobility services, training and support.
• 175 residents attended a support group or the Survivor and Family Seminar provided by the Brain Injury Association of Missouri.
• Improvements were made to 4 facilities that serve persons with disabilities which include residential and therapeutic services.
• A monthly respite program was provided to 19 families who have a child with a disability.
• New equipment was purchased by the sheltered workshop to provide additional employment opportunities.
• A prom was held for 125 Jefferson County residents with special needs.

Preventative Health Care

• 45,026 rides were provided to Jefferson County residents.

Safe Housing

• 60 homeowners received repairs and modifications to their homes to make them safer and more accessible.

Transportation

• 433 children and adults received basic health screenings and education.
